After a melanoma diagnosis
The first steps after histological confirmation of melanoma.
1. Keep the pathology report
The report should identify the diagnosis and key pathological features. If material is incomplete or the case is complex, pathology review may be appropriate.
2. Avoid an unplanned second procedure
Further excision and possible sentinel lymph node biopsy should be considered together before the next operation.
3. Complete clinical assessment
Examination and any imaging are selected according to pathology and clinical stage; not every patient needs the same tests.
4. Agree a multidisciplinary plan
The sequence of surgery and systemic treatment can matter. The plan is individual.
