Professional biography
Vasyl V. Ostafiichuk is a surgical oncologist, MD, PhD, and Head of the Department of Orthopaedic Oncology and Skin & Soft Tissue Tumors at the National Cancer Institute of Ukraine.
His primary clinical fields are melanoma, dermato-oncology, skin cancer surgery, sentinel lymph node biopsy and oncologic reconstruction. His additional specialist practice includes soft-tissue sarcoma, bone tumours and orthopaedic oncology.
Qualifications
MD, Bogomolets National Medical University (2008); internship and clinical residency in general surgery; specialist training in clinical oncology and oncologic surgery; PhD, National Cancer Institute (2018).

Three dimensions of my surgical practice
My work connects three complementary fields. In each, oncologic safety is planned alongside reconstruction, functional outcome and multidisciplinary decision-making.
Dermato-oncology, Mohs surgery and skin reconstruction
Care for melanoma and other malignant skin tumours, margin control in appropriate cases, and reconstruction after oncologic resection.
Soft-tissue sarcoma and reconstructive oncologic surgery
Biopsy and definitive-treatment planning with a specialist team, with attention to function, neurovascular structures and reconstructive needs.
Bone tumours, orthopaedic oncology and limb-sparing surgery
Complex resection and reconstructive decisions for bone tumours, focused on oncologic control, weight-bearing function and quality of life.
Teaching and mentorship
As Head of Department, I contribute to the education of interns and early-career doctors through complex-case review, pre-operative planning and development of safe team practice.
Team-based melanoma care pathway
At the National Cancer Institute of Ukraine, melanoma care is planned by a multidisciplinary team that connects pathology, imaging, systemic treatment, surgery and follow-up. Immunotherapy, including pembrolizumab in appropriate clinical situations, is part of this team pathway rather than a stand-alone surgical service.
International scientific activity
Department research is regularly presented at international professional congresses in dermato-oncology, sarcoma and orthopaedic oncology.
